A Little History
I come from the small island of Guernsey, in the Channel Islands. Those with an interest in the past might know that the 8th May is celebrated as V.E. Day, the day that Europe was finally freed from the yoke of Nazi Germany at the end of the Second World War. Fewer people know that on the next day, the 9th May 1945, the German Occupation of the Channel Islands was brought to an end. REGENERATE GUERNSEY
Guernsey has a habit of ‘chewing with small mouthfuls’. We like to solve small problems with small solutions. The trouble with this approach is that we don’t realise we’ve got bigger problems until it feels like it’s too late. For many of us, it’s starting to feel this way. Our suburban sprawl continues to spread, with ever more ‘little boxes’ taking up what feels like important open space. We’re starting to feel full, and it’s bringing out the worst in us. Story-Telling Live!
I had a great time this morning with four visitors from England, who I took on a driving tour of WWII sites around the island. We visited some coastal forts, the Mirus battery and the Underground Hospital , saw the memorial to Hubert Nicolle MC at Icart and enjoyed a coffee and cake at Vistas . Telling the story of the occupation of the Channel Islands through a combination of historical stats, personal stories and physical exploration was an absolute pleasure! We even made
